1992 P 25c with a die anomaly(?) where the rim meets the field, obv & rev.

This came out of the same bag of misc. change included in the binder collection I recently bought.

Ok, I'm out of my wheelhouse with quarters but the minting process should be basically the same no matter what the denomination.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what is happening to the area where the rim meets the field. It's on both sides. It reminds me of "trenching" that we see around the bust on wheats in the early 40's but it also has multiple concentric rings in some areas as well. There is are very distinct lines separating the rim from the field. There are reeds around the entire perimeter, but well worn.

The reverse is VLDS (Very Late Die State) judging by the radial die flow lines, but the obverse is MDS at most. This is why I don't think the cause is Die Deterioration.

I don't believe they retooled the dies. Maybe it was just something for the master dies for the year but I don't see signs of it on images @ Heritage Auctions.

Anyways, I hope I've described it well enough and my images show it well enough for some insight from you folks. Thanks in advance.
Fingers crossed someone has seen this before and can give me a clue.

You might be onto something there EV.

EDIT: But this anomaly effects the entire perimeter, not just one side and both sides are affected not just the hammer die.

I've seen this before on quarters and think on dimes too maybe? Never really gave it much thought though. Is the coin off weight, maybe light or heavy that would affect the strike?

hmm, very interesting - never seen this before (never really looked for it either) I may have to pull aside a few of my 1992 P's to have a look see if it is consistent on others too..
