Can anyone shed some light on these scales with a certainty?
What, for example is a BUC coin on the sheldon scale and on the british scale? and same goes for other grades?.
I have tried to make a Table to compare these, BUT......input needed to confirm or correct!
I most likely have some of them incorrect...

You can put
before the table and
after the table. This will force the browser to display it in a fixed size font rather than proportional.

I would only differ in that "FDC," to me, implies a far higher level of preservation than MS65; more like 69-70. Fleur de Coin should rightly be more of an aspiration than a reality in all but the rarest cases.

Ok, Fleur de coin is used in the french speaking countries very frequently for relative high grade, NOT extremely high grade coins.
My bigest question is as above:

where do de designation UNC-Bunc- choice unc gem unc etc come in to play in relation to the MS scale?
I am really not exactly sure and hope someone can shed some light at this..

Here is the way I have understood the difference to be from a website I visit:

US SPINKS
AG POOR
VG FAIR
FINE VERY GOOD
VF FINE
EF VF
MS60 EF
UNC MS 62-65
BU MS 67
FDC MS70

Thank you Malissa,

question: how do the brits designate where one grade ends and the other starts....big stretch between MS62 and 65...
I experience this problem all the time in Germany....
It appears they can s t r e t c h thei grades whenever it does suit them....
or can one get used to it?

I think the problem with grading is that it isn't an exact science.

Even with the Sheldon scale, one persons MS-65 is different from the next person's.

While giving a range of say 62-65 is less precise it is probably at the same time more accurate. It is easier to place a coin in a wider bracket and therefore get consistent grading, rather than 3 different grades from 3 different people, for the same coin.

The problem is worse if you are talking about coins other than those of the US. With US coins, because of the limited number of coins, there are very detailed descriptions of what constitutes each grade.

Given the thousands upon thousands of world coins this is not possible. For this reason, while the Sheldon scale works well (Although there are still discrepancies it seems) for US coins, it is better to have wider brackets for other coins in my opinion.

I can say out of experience, it has worked for me and against me.
I guess it is the old story: buyer beware..and careful
ask many questions ans ASK FOR SHARP and detailed images.

Definitely good advice. Grade is always a tough one. I suppose it depends what you need the grading for.

Then there is always eye appeal just to confuse things further!
