What grade do you think for this 1964 D? I was also wondering about the discoloration on the obverse (what causes it) and how it impacts the value of the coin?

@aro, that surface discoloration looks like tarnish to me, which is very common on silver coins. It is a little odd that parts of it seem to follow the design elements, e.g. around Kennedy's face and the words IN GOD. Hopefully someone can weigh in why that might happen and also provide you with a grade estimate.

An example of how toning varies according to storage, handling, and environment.

With this example, some will like it and pay accordingly, others will pass.

The toning shouldn't affect the grade, but it certainly can affect eye appeal, which may negatively impact the value of the coin. The grade is probably high AU or low MS, which means the value is mostly bullion value anyway.

Just tone on the obverse. Looks like light circulation, AU-58.

It looks like there was something covering the obverse - like loose plastic of similar it protected the high points of the coin but the in the corners of the device elements.

Probably tarnish as stated. I'll grade it at AU.

I'm going with AU58

i agree with the other comments. the tarnish is most likely from improper storage where there was higher humidity interacting with the metal. its not on the reverse because the coin was probably sitting face up

Agree lightly circulated, just a bullion tracker.
