I've noticed that the designs for these two coins seem identical.

If you saw a photo a 1796 bust coin and had no sense of scale, is there any way to know whether the coin you were looking at was a half or a dollar?

I think he's talking about the obverse.

CF, no, either obv or rev.

1796NoPole, you are correct. I've never noticed that! Thanks.

(But it does seem that if you only had the obverse to look at, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.)

But that's only if you had a dollar and a half sitting side by side. If you had one or the other by itself, I don't think you could know which one you were looking at. That was the point of my original post.

The dentils of the 1796 halves are slanted and sharp, appear like the teeth of a saw. Dollars have small and even dentils.

Date size as well, the date on the dollar appears small because the entire coin is larger. The date on the half dollar appears large because the coin is smaller.
