I'm considering getting this coin slabbed. Any opinions as to grade or should I (PGCS or ICCS)

The pics are a little dark in the hair area which is one of the first places I look. But from the condition and coloring on the rest of the coin I would give an opinion of at least AU55. I am sure it may be higher and some others will be along soon with their thoughts.
I very rarely extend myself into MS grades. Not that sure of myself yet. :)
That is a beautiful coin! I think ICCS would definitely be worth it for that one.

I don't know a whole lot about these, and I wouldn't even venture a grade, but that is a really eye-catching beautiful coin!

Hello, I think Malissa is on the right track here. However if you want a higher grade, send it to NGC or PCGS. I have a 1864 Newbrunswick 20 cent. For me, and I am conservative, it was ONLY a qwuestion of it being MS62 , 63 or perhaps even 64. So off it went to ICCS....... and sorry have to run, but will post pictures in a while...for you to garde

wwhitman, if you enjoy graded coins, then yours would definitely be one to get graded by ICCS It's beautiful! I'm nowhere near an expert (yet on these or I would hazard a guess. Some people don't like anything between them and their coins, so getting them graded is not something they would do. HB, your coin would get the attention it deserves if you were to open a new topic with your grading question. It makes it easier for people to search on certain coins when there is only one request per topic. The more advanced grading experts would also find it easier to find.

By no means was I trying to belittle the other coin above. Just wanted to create interest in Grading, as I believe these two coins are about the same. HOWEVER, I hold back with the results because of ONE very important reason which I will disclose at the end. so, perhaps we get whitman and mine and open another subject, as they are both Canadian Maritime coins ? in the Canadian coin section? Whitman, you lead, I follow tomorrow... promise. I also promise that the final fact will be an interesting surprise to most if not all graders.

wwhitman, that is a gorgeous example of a gorgeous coin. If you are inclined to get it certified, then go ahead and do so. The PCGS population report for this coin shows a population of only 34 in Mint State. Perhaps yours will wind up #35?

have it graded by either NGC or PCGS, as you will most likely be dissappointed by ICCS grade. I was and I thought my coin at the time would grade between 62 and 64... came back as 50... not a single issue with the coin. was "brand new". HHB

Still in indecision My Charlton has MS-60 at $75 Canadian. Investing in certification would add $20. Don't see where that would be cost effective? As for ICCS - if they graded at MS-anything I would be pleased. Only hindrance is sending to Canada. Might get there and not return

I haven't, but I know other members have sent coins in to ICCS. I would suggest giving them a call and asking about their process - i.e. do they let you know when they receive your coin(s)? Do they email or call you when they are returning them (this would be good simply because you need to be there to sign), etc. They do not have a web site, which is a bit of a hindrance, but calling them should provide all the info. Maybe someone with the experience of sending them coins will chime in.

wwhitman, I'd say it's MS-60 to MS-62 brown. It could also be AU, it's hard to tell from the pictures. Yet another coin that falls into the area of either UNC, or just barely circulated.
HHB, I'd say an AU-50 is bang on for that 20 cent. MS coins will have bag marks, but not fine hairlines like that.

It is a gorgeous coin, but I'm not convinced it would get an MS grade. It may, I'm not an expert, but they are tough and I'm thinking the rims, at least, could put it AU. To really be worth your while you need that MS grade ... I'd think hard before submitting, although on the plus side, it would get you familiar with the process. I love the coin though

hello, compare it with the 20 cent New Brunswick pictures I posted above... I thought it is high ms, at least 62 or more well, I found out the hard way:it came back as a 50... ICCS has different grading standards for Canadian Maritime coins than for regular Canadian coins. same goes for tokens.I will re-submit some of mine to NGC and then sell my doubles / triples with Heritage or Teletrade. However, if you are a true blue collector in canada and not thinking of selling... go with ICCS. If you submit around 100 coins, fees are about CAN $8 or so.. good luck with the coin, it is nice..
