Hello,

Does anyone on the forum know what this item may be? I don't know if it's a coin or a medallion/pendant/amulet? It was left to me by a friend who collected Buddhist artifacts but also had some Hindu items in his collection. Google image search brings up a couple of similar items that were made in India.

I've tried to remove it from the amulet case but the case appears to be cemented together and I don't want to destroy the very attractive case.

It's about 5.5 cm and in total weighs 146 grams. I have a similar amulet case and it weighs 37 grams so I'm guessing the coin weighs about 100 grams. I haven't tested it with Nitric acid, but have checked it with a magnet and neither the coin/medallion or the case are magnetic at all. I assume there is silver content.

Thanks in advance for anyone's insight into this item.

Hi John,

It appears that the coin/medallion fits almost to the edge of the amulet cover. So perhaps the coin is around 5.2 or 5.3 cm.

@dmn, first welcome to CCF.

Second, I agree that the enamelwork and design of the case, make it best to keep the two pieces together. The inner disc seems too big to be a coin, so I suspect a medal of some sort.

Third, in order for us to help you best, any chance that you can read any of the inscription on either side? Thx.

@Spence,

Thanks for your reply. No, I can't read any of the inscription on the medal. I think it may be an old Indian script of which there are about 11 of them. Possibly Kadamba, but that's just a wild guess.
