Attributed counterstamps on early Bust Dimes are scarcer than hen's teeth. Their small diameter didn't lend itself to the practice.

LOCKWOOD & SCRIBNER were partners in a silversmith and watchmaking business, During the mid 1840's.Alfred Lockwood, born in 1797, was the principal. He was listed, working alone, in the 1842 NY City directory. Levi Scribner joined him a year or two later. Alfred sold the business in 1847. Levi then took over the shop, located at 265 Pearl Street, and he is listed at that address in the 1848 city directory.

Here's an ad of theirs that appeared in Sheldon's Business Directory for 1845 ....

Here are pics of a silver ladle that they produced. Note that the makers' mark differs from that on the dime. Silversmiths often used multiple stampings in their work. This surviving ladle, shown below, rests in the Winterhur museum ....

The counterstamp was unknown to exonumia authors Brunk and Rulau in 2003. This 1820 dime, bearing a LOCKWOOD & SCRIBNER c/s presently appears to be the only one extant. Given that the c/s is curved, it may have been applied to watch cases that the pair created/repaired. The heavy wear on this 1820 dime suggests it may possibly have been Scribner's pocket piece; this, as he was perhaps born about that year? As is inevitably the case with c/s'd coins, unanswerable questions abound.

Unlike many of the c/s's I've acquired, this one wasn't cheap, but IMHO, the price was reasonable. I won it as auction for $160. Not bad for an apparently unique piece of history. methinks.

The silversmith c/s's are among my favored occupations. What I appreciate most about them is that I'm often able to acquire silver spoons which bear matching hallmarks or retail marks. I've over a hundred such pairings in my silversmith collection. Many of the early silver spoons are, in their own right, works of art like many coins, tokens and medals.

It's not uncommon for me to learn that the spoons are as difficult to locate as the counterstamped coins. Like many pre Civil War silver coins, silverware was often melted down and recycled during subsequent years; this, as silver-plating became more popularized. When I can't locate a companion silver spoon, a pic of matching mark on same suffices, In this case, Lockwood & Scribner, I fell short on both counts.

Collecting as I do, I've long enjoyed the challenge and the hunt. Many a morning that I awake, my first thought is, "What counterstamp project might I pursue today?" My second thought, as I ascend from the bed, is, "Am I still ambulatory?"
