Nothing found searching tokencatalog. Best I've found is reference to a German Political Party from the 1860's. A lot of Custer County's in my area, one in Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska - so given found in MT I'll assume MT but could be regional.

Reverse is blank but has denticles (?)

Translates to German Progress Association. Here is one possibility as I cannot find an exact match for the name.

I read that one and likely the most direct relation given proximity. Found correlation with name before too - only thing missing is PARTEI but VEREIN can also mean union, club, or one might assume, party.

The German Progress Party (German: Deutsche Fortschrittspartei, DFP)

With the 1870's coinage (metal detecting) found mere yards away, I'll put the date on this in that period. This coincides with the political party being created in the 1860's. I'm drawing a blank on the purposes of the token outside of it being some kind of membership proof.

There are so many tokens and medals with unknown origin. Wonder if there are local resources that you might be able to access such as newspapers or historical records? There is a silver deposit that was mined nearby so a hunch would be miner families of German decent trying to organize some form of party. Best of luck to you trying to find additional info.

Someone on a FB thread forwarded me an article that ties this group to the Yellowstone Montana area in 1877. Fairly good shape for a 150 year old dirt find.
