Speaking of sports hero, when I was about ten years old my dad took me to hear Jesse Owens speak at the local college. Afterwards we went on stage to meet him. I wish my dad or I would have asked for his autograph.
Jesse sure did well in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, three years before Hitler started WWII. The mint did release a Jesse Owens bronze medal.
I agree with College Barbers on every point. Why the sudden move by the U.S. Mint now? The more appropriate question is at what price point? It would seem to be well above other mints given their latest pricing structure.

Very interesting, Alpha. Thanks for posting. At least one CCAC member stressed that the committee's purpose is to comment on the proposed designs as presented and not comment on the merits of the program.
A USM press release heralding the striking of the first one ounce Superman silver medal (at Philadelphia) included this :
Quote: Debuting in summer 2025, Superman will be depicted on 24-karat gold coins, .999 fine silver medals (each accompanied by a serialized Certificate of Authenticity), and non-precious metal (clad) medals - celebrating one of the most iconic super heroes of all time.
Here's an idea.....how about they issue a silver coin and charge their typical inflated price. Then to spur interest every 10,000th order gets a solid .9999 gold version randomly sent out such that very few are issued. Instant rarity! As far as the DC coins go, I don't like the idea and I was a huge Superman and Batman reader growing up. I think it cheapens the U.S. coin program. What's next? Alfred E. Neuman? Why not go all the way and have a "Legends of Religion" series? Collect them all!!!

I feel the same way. I do not mind the medals—there are plenty of US Mint issued medals that do not interest me, a few more will not bother me—but these gold coins go too far, IMHO.
Here are the 1/2 oz gold $50 and silver medal designs. Don't know why the reverse medal says hope and strength. Superman's original motto was truth justice and the American way which DC Comics changed to truth justice and a better tomorrow to appeal more worldwide. In 2023 I bought 1 oz silver Samoa with Queen and Superman, mintage 15K for $36.82, won't buy the US Mint gold, will think about buying the silver medal. Samoa also issued a 2023 Batman 1 oz silver which I bought.
