First of all I'm aware these poor things have been beat to heck and arent worth anything but I have 2 pennies, 1948 D and 1964 D that appear red in color. Is this due to cleaning or something else? I had several other, more gold in color that was from being cleaned.... same thing going on here or no? The 1964 one seems to have a deeper red color. Thank you

Not sure you're picking up on how to spot just average circulated cents. Why are you showing these?

Copper tones into various shades when this old. That is all you are seeing here. The pics also make it look like the at least the '48-D was cleaned and re-toned as well.

Dear Coinfrog,
I never said there was anything special about these.. I just wanted to know why they were red in color. Being the newest of newbies to the Coin World I'm just curious. I'm sorry I'm not as knowledgeable as you are and have to ask questions. For 16 years I was a housewife and mother and 3 months ago I left my husband... I finally found something that I'm really interested in and thought I'd found a place that could help me navigate and even learn about them. I don't have money to buy super nice mint state coins so I have what I have but think they are amazing nonetheless. So maybe next time a newcomer has posted something dumb and worthless in your opinion maybe don't be so rude? When one reads "why are you showing these?" I will now second guess everything I want to post or have questions about. But hey what do I know right? Have a marvelous day.

Sincerely,
A girl trying to learn something new

with Earl.
Copper is a metal that can turn to a multitude of colors when exposed to the environment.
They usually start out looking bronze or reddish, and can go to a dark brown, or even green in the correct circumstances (think of the Statue of Liberty - she is green and is made of copper).

@Girl - C'mon, don't be naive. You've posted lots of threads with everyday Lincoln cents, one after another, all pretty much alike. We'd just like to see evidence you're moving on to better stuff. Try not to be so rude yourself.

Environmental toning. It happens from circulation and from the environment they were in.

Girl - We're good. Just asking whether you're interested in collecting higher-grade coins with more collector interest.

Coinfrog...of course I would want to but right now I don't Uxbridge the money for that... I've only been working 3 months now (remember I was a stay at home mom for 16 years) so maybe down the road I can....actually it would be incredible to get better stuff. Gotta start somewhere right? getting ready to post Buffalo nickles. I love them beat up and all lol

That would be neat! A Buffalo nickel found in circulation is always a win. Bonus points if it has a readable date.
