Since 2016 I've now searched through exactly £5,000 worth of £2 coins. There have been no £2 coins issued for circulation to my knowledge since 2016. Here is an analysis of the 2,500 coins I've checked! TOTAL CHECKED 2500 FACE VALUE £5,000 Definitive coins: 1997 56 1998 366 1999 165 2000 125 2001 158 2002 73 2003 82 2004 53 2005 29 2006 75 2007 50 2008 128 2009 59 2010 41 2011 145 2012 27 2013 134 2014 101 2015 Rank-Broadley 358 2015 Jody Clark 3 2016 Jody Clark 12 TOTAL 2240 Commemorative coins: 1999 Rugby 9 2001 Marconi 10 2002 Games 0 2003 DNA 6 2004 Locomotive 11 2005 St Pauls 22 2005 Gunpowder Plot 13 2006 Brunel 10 2006 Station 21 2007 Union 17 2007 Slavery 23 2008 Games Centenary 2 2008 Games Handover 0 2009 Burns 3 2009 Darwin 7 2010 F Nightingale 4 2011 Bible 1 2011 Mary Rose 1 2012 C Dickens 13 2012 Games Handover 0 2013 Guinea 7 2013 Tube Train 2 2013 LT Logo 0 2014 Trinity House 9 2014 WW1 9 2015 WW1 8 2015 Magna Carta 2 2016 Fire of London 3 2016 WW1 16 2016 Shak History 18 2016 Shak Comedy 3 2016 Shak Tragedy 7 TOTAL 257 Others 2011 forgery 1 2012 forgery 1 2015 forgery 1
GRAND TOTAL 2500
I have previously found at least two of the 2008 Games Handover coins in circulation, all four varieties of the 2002 Games coins and at least two London Transport Roundel coins. I've never had a 2012 Games Handover coin in circulation.

Interesting to see the stats on this @numis. To help me learn something today, can you describe the process for dealing with the counterfeits that you encountered? Obviously you didn't spend them, but are you allowed to keep them or are you supposed to send them into a government agency for investigation? Thx for teaching us Yanks about this!

If I sent them to The Royal Mint they would be confiscated and I'd get nothing in return, so I've kept them.

Rob, were you looking for anything in particular? Let's see now -- 2,500 coins over eight years works out to fewer than one coin a day! Seems like a pretty relaxed schedule, ho ho! I'm guessing you weren't bringing these home from the bank in rolls (...which is something lots of American collectors do, looking for mint errors, scarce mintmarks, etc.).

Quote: Rob, were you looking for anything in particular? Not really, just interested to see how many of each type and date I could get. Also, when I started surveying these, I hadn't got examples of the 2016 commemoratives for my collection. I did get quite a few £20 bags of coins from the bank as well as note down the dates of each £2 coin I got in change, I didn't really worry about how long it was taking me as no £2 coins have been issued for circulation since I started the survey, so the results won't have been distorted by new coins being released.

Got it, Rob...more like a census.
Were the earlier 2P coins, like my lonely 1986 Games commem, not "released into circulation"?
Quite an undertaking!

Correct - the pre 1997 single colour £2 coins were not intended for circulation, just as commemoratives, although the banks I think still take them at face value. For info the types with mintage figures are: 1986 Commonwealth games, 8,212,184 1989 Bill of Rights, 4,392,825 1989 Claim of Rights, 381,400 1994 Bank of England, 1,443,116 1995 50th anniversary End of WW2, 4,394,566 1995 50th anniversary of United Nations, 1,668,575 1996 European Football Championships, 5,195,350
So Claim of Rights is far an away the scarcest and can make £30 or more. My favourite design though is the 1996 football one.
