I've been looking for a nice XF / au one for my type set.. get quite pricey in higher grades.. Anyway I'm split between vf25 & vf30 but will lean vf25, not a bad coin!
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

VF-30. It looks pleasing to me, with only a hint of a very old cleaning (but market acceptable). By the way, it's a B-6 Large Letters variety, which is R3. It receives a small premium over the Small Letters varieties.

VF-35 because PCGS is loose with the series.
Suffering from bust half fever.

VF 25 (at least it doesn't look like a details coin unlike 90% of coins on this sub forum)

It is straight graded VF30. I'm in the VF25 camp, old cleaning. I'll post up a pic of the holder tonight when I get home.

When I looked at this coin, I had to do a double take. As Reivers Jewels pointed out, this is the B-6 Large Letter variety which is according to PCGS 5x more scarce than the Small Letter variety, though not much of a premium over the small letter.

Any way, as you can see, PCGS failed on the attribution.

I already have a small letter, so wanted a large letter to go with it. Assuming I like it in person, I may just crack it out, we shall see.

I have seen a number of PCGS slabbed 1831 25Cs incorrectly labeled, usually a Small Letters designation for a Large Letters coin. For some reason, people seem to confuse these two major varieties a lot. I have never understood why. The distinction between the actual reverse legend lettering is indeed subtle, but it absolutely should not be used as the diagnostic. Look at the sizes of 25C on all varieties! The Large Letters varieties all have a large 25C, very noticeably larger than all the Small Letters varieties, so much so that the size of 25C can be used to distinguish the two classes instantly and to the naked eye. I suspect Browning himself is to blame for the classification. They should be named the Small 25C and the Large 25C varieties.

For the Small Letters varieties, B-3 is the one you want, which is a rare coin coming in at R5- and carries a significant premium over the other Small Letter varieties. [B-3 has a small and high 25C; same reverse as B-4 but the obverse star 13 is far from the curl.] For the Large Letters varieties, people often like B-5 because of the very noticeable recut 1 in the date (though it is a relatively common variety). What you *really* want is the B-7 Large Letters variety, which has the same obverse die as B-5 but is close to being a very rare coin coming it at a very high R5+ (estimated survival in all grades and conditions is 35-40 examples at most). The B-7 commands an extreme premium over all other 1831 25Cs. [The diagnostics of B-7 are the obverse recut 1 together with the reverse 2 being completely left of the fletching.]
