This coin came in today's mail. The seller offered it as Uncirculated. The luster is subdued and it looks like some softness on the top of the buffalo's head. I'm not sure if this is just the strike or a sign of wear. The rest of the coin looks pretty sharp. It has some streaks of light read toning.

It comes with a 30 day return. What do people think? Thanks.

Doesn't look uncirculated to me, but I like the nickel toning.

Paul I'm not seeing anything that would indicate that this coin was circulated. there a couple small nicks by the date. probably bag hits. the flatness of the fur on the head and a little flatness of the horn and tip of the tail i'd attribute to strike. the first places you would see any wear would be on the forward leg shoulder and high point of the cheek. I can't see anything there.

i looked at a couple hundred buffs to try and find ones with similar coloring. I found a couple by both PCGS and NGC similar. they graded them MS62. my original thought was MS63 but I would then adjust that for lack of luster and the striated toning.

Obverse is lacking luster. Either hidden hairlines or lightly circulated. Just looks unusual and not what a BU example would look like.

Very pretty! I agree with @panzaldi. I think your Buffalo is at least MS63. It's very hard to identify circulation on Buffs, especially from a photo. I personally like the toning, but it could be indicative of a past cleaning.

Thanks for all the replies. I got the coin for AU money ($25), so I think I'll keep it. The other coin I got from this seller was a nice red and brown 1901 Victoria British Penny. It was my first time buying from this seller.

I do agree that the luster is subdued. There is some there, but it doesn't stand out.

anyone calling this coin AU, i'd like to know what you are seeing to call AU especially the obverse? these eyes can't see any sign of circulation or any wear. I can't see any marks on the fields/rims that would indicate it other than some extremely small little ticks on the rims

if you are looking at the fur on the head and horn, this is very common. here's just one even more extreme example graded MS63 by PCGS. also not similar color striations on the obv

Rubbing on the high points is most notable on the reverse, Buffalo's head, horn, shoulder, tail. Maybe it's MS but with these photos it is an AU to me.
