or How I pay the price I want to pay without getting sniped. Thought I would share this with my buddies here as the bad economy seems to be making this a successful strategy for acquiring coins on ebay. Look for Buy It Now listings with a Make an Offer. Especially listings that have been up for awhile. Make an offer that you think represents what you are willing to pay. In almost every case my offers have been accepted at one third to one half of the Buy It Now price. Many listings are going out with no action, especially Buy It Now listings, and sellers would rather get something for the coin than nothing at all. Try it - it works!

It seems a good time to buy. I get the daily email notifications for certain searches on ebay and someone used exactly this strategy and got a great deal. Would have jumped at the chance to buy the coin at the price they got...

I've gotten some real bargains lately through bids as well on ebay.

A lot of ebay buyers ignore the "Buy It Now" listings because the
asking price is almost always significantly above the fair market rate.
I can count the number of "Buy It Now" items where the price was right
(and I did buy it right then for the asking price) on one hand.
This does imply that the rare correctly-priced "Buy It Now" listing
won't stay around very long!

In this economy, overpriced "Buy It Now" listings and high reserves are not going to cut it!

Sniping seems to have declined a bit in recent years, because more bidders are wise to it.
You just have to bid your maximum bid right off the bat, and if you
get sniped then, that means someone's willing to pay more than
you and they'll win anyway.

It's not completely off topic, I haven't experienced much of a decline on my antique military items I sell. I don't know if the decline of coin snipes is just down, but I have gotten some impressive last minute snipes on my auctions that make me stare in awe. I've had a couple pieces that were at $100-$300 with an hour to go and at the end, they reach $1000. I do get a lot of bidders from overseas if that might have something to do with it.

I've been bidding on ebay alot this week myself! Sniping is happening but not as much as I seem to remember from my ebay days 6-7 years ago. But I wasn't doing coins back then, so not a great comparison.

I've been biding just over what I want to pay for an item. If I win, its usually lower then my max bid so its still under what I wanted to pay. But if I get outbid, then I definitely don't want to pay a price that high. Rarely does anybody bid the price up to exactly my max bid which would be a little higher than I wanted to pay. This strategy lets me bid early without having to watch the last minute for snipers. It can be exciting sniping or watching for other snipers, but aggravating when you loose the battle.

Its working so far. =)

I did a "buy it now" on a note last week. I offered 25% less than the buy it now price.....bam! immediately accepted.......I should have offered 30% less...but I was happy with the price. This may be a good time to scan the buy it now listings and make offers.

Just got a 1916 Walking Liberty half for my set at 40% less than the Buy It Now Price with an offer. Times are hard for sellers and good for collectors.

Even if its buy it now, i'll still send an email on it to see if they would lower it. I just recently paid $165 for a $185 item after a few emails.

I also do what Dnickels does. I always bid a couple bucks over what I really want to pay then hope it doesn't get bid up to that, if it does then it was bid to high in my opinion.

Sniping does not have to be any more exciting than bidding early using the ebay system...I snipe using a free sniping service (gixen.com). I put in the amount I am willing to pay hours or days before, just like you do on ebay. Yet I have not done anything to prematurely draw attention to the item, and have not created any sort of bidding war. My bid is placed in the last 7 seconds, too late for any human (generally) to respond to my bid.

And no, I don't always win the auction. Matter of fact, most the time I don't. Because like you said, many times the winning price is more than I want to pay for the item.

I say it isn't exciting because I'm usually not around to watch the auction end.
