Hi, all,

I recently got a small bunch of medieval European bracteate (uniface) silver coins. I've attached two examples here. The first (bear) is 12mm, 0.19gm; the second (dragon) is 20mm, 0.64gm.

Searching through en.numista was long and fruitless (tho fascinating). Does anyone know of any other online resources for searching European bracteates?

Alternatively, if anyone has printed reference resources and would be willing to do some legwork in them, I could post additional coin images. There are only seven of them.

Thanks!

@j_hew, you may need to use a more nuanced approach since, as you note, there isn't a single website with everything that you need. Numista and some of the websites that @john1 mentioned can be a good start, but I think that you will need to employ a hybrid approach.

By way of example, a bear as the central design element is almost always going to mean that the coin is from Bern Switzerland. On acsearch, with the keywords BRACTEATE
and BEAR, there are three listings that are close:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=670706
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2078827
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=5721827

Your coin clearly has *something* above the bear, but I'm not sure that it is a facing royal head. You would need access to the standard catalog on swiss coins (HMZ) to fine tune your attribution. I have this reference (as likely others do here on CCF) and would be happy to try to fully attribute your coins. The process can take a bit of time and having diameter and weight information is always useful. If you'd like to go down this pathway, please post your coins each in its own separate thread. Thx.

...second option is Anhalt-Bernburg, Germany.
Though I am pretty sure the bear with an eagle on its back is Bern.

Edit: Found: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6455312

Remember that the spelling is brakteat in central Europe, so sometimes that turns up more hits on a search. I agree with spence, that picking good search terms and using acsearch or MA-shops is a good way to proceed. You will be doing lots of scrolling, but it works.

Good luck with the lion.

Edit (again). Oops! Not sure where to look for a dragon. For a griffon, usually Pomerania, (Pommern in German and Pomorze in Polish).
