Yesterday, I decided to take a page from the Tropicalbats playbook, and buy an encapsulated but unattributed variety coin. Purchased on ebay as an ordinary 1942-S Mercury dime AU-58 in PCGS slab #4859920. It's a gold shield slab with TrueView, so you won't have to endure any my usual magnifier wrangling. =)
Wexler lists the following die markers with no pictures: Obverse: A die scratch runs south from the underside of the hair on the back of the head. The specimen examined showed Mechanical Doubling throughout the obverse. Reverse: A die gouge can be found between the N of UNITED and the leaves closer to the leaves. I believe the die gouge referenced is the left one in the image.
NGC VarietyPlus comments that: The mintmark was faintly triple-punched east of its earlier impressions, though only two images are clear on most examples. I looked up another example online, and sure enough, the third impression had faded, probably with die wear.
And finally, a prior CCF thread where someone else presented a 1942-S/S/S dime for discussion.
