Would this be considered an error? If so what kind?

It appears to be caused by over polishing (die abrasion).

That's really neat. I agree it's an over-polished or re-polished die. Can we see an image of the whole reverse?

There is more going on than just a die polishing event. It seem like the roof line is changed.
Here is another 1984-S proof nickel:

Yeah, Dearborn is right. That looks a lot more like the low relief railings from earlier nickels.

It's definitely a 1984 and not a 1974?

Hello wrongalot. I took a look at a few pictures of other 1984 S proof Jefferson nickels and they all had that gap in the roof line so I am tempted to say it is the normal design of the coin. I'm not positive though. The rest of the group is way more experienced and could give you a better idea. ErrorsRCool.

Perhaps you could post full pictures obverse & reverse of your coin, it is the preferred method on this forum.

Sorry, got date wrong, it is a 1972-S and a reversed design variety.
Thanks everyone for your comments.

I got a new 1971-S proof nickel today, and I noticed that almost all of the railing details had been erased by die polishing. It reminded me of this thread, so I thought I would add a few pics in case any future searchers wondered if that were normal on proof nickels.
