Die Deterioration doubling. It isn't reducing the size of the devices. That melted look on the reverse will all be flowing towards the cavity of Monticello.
It's interesting that this is a P. Usually that type of Die Deterioration is known on Denver minted nickels. For whatever reason, it isn't as common on Philadelphia nickels.
