Looks like roadkill damage to me.

Could be the indentations of gravel if it had been run over from the other side? Is it just on one side?

Maybe someone took a shotgun to it?

You talking 'Road kill' - makes me hungry

Ya think damage occurred during the striking process?
Coin looks almost uncirculated and damage similar on both sides.
Holes too small for shotgun pellets?

No scratches which should be there if it was a roadkill

Definite post-mint damage. You'll have to call CSI if you want to know how it happened.
