I have come across thousands of pounds of World Coins. A large dealer in my city is real good friends with my wife. He had a room full of old coins. We have made a deal that anything I find I can sell and we will split 50/50. Most of it has been picked clean of silver and gold of course. I have found a few coins early 1800's. Nearly all are C/N,C,Alum.

I am trying to sort now by dark coins versus silver color coins.I will start to divide into countries sometimes today. Wow I love this hobby so far.

A question I have is Great Britain money good like ours. Say I have a 1950 Shilling is it still worth a Shilling in Great Britain?

I have a ton of Italian and France coins. Are they no good as far as spending money in these countries because of the Euro?

First, welcome to the forums.

The UK went to decimal system of coinage where 100 pence equals a pound on the 15th of Feb. 1971. I missed all of that since I came over to the UK from the US in 1998.

Therefore shillings no longer circulate. That is something that I do miss alot from the US is finding an old coin in rolls or in change.

Last week, I did manage to exchange £2 for old single colour £2 coin that the person in front of me tried to give the confused cashier. This one was rather beat up but it has only been the second one that I have managed to obtain.

Italy and France have been on the Euro since 2002 and therefore your old coins can no longer be used there.

Your best option would be stick around and learn more. Contribute to the forums. Post picturs of your interesting coins or finds (we love pictures). Ask questions.

Later on when you have over 50 posts, visit the buy/sell/trade section.

Thanks so if I had 100 pence of any time period it could be used for coinage in Britain as a pound? Shillings just no longer are used correct? This is going to be a long drawn out deal so bare with me.

Glad to be on board!

... not exactly.

As kena said, the old pound was in 240 pence (plural for pennies). That means the penny today is actually worth 2.4x the big penny/coins you have in face. Plus, I think the melt value for the large penny is worth 7p GBP, but if it's not a flat disk then collectors would pay around 50c USD for it.

warjag- welcome!

Ultimately, all coins from the UK from before 1971 no longer circulate and would not be accepted. So now all UK coins from 1967 and before are purely numismatic items.

Please post some pics of some of the great coins you are finding in that room. As you can tell, we are quite curious what treasures have turned up in there.

I have gone through 5 bags now. All the copper/brass had some nice coins in them. I have started on the Nickle/Silver(color silver) and have not found much at all.
I plan on putting up some pictures this week of some of the findings.

I see there is a forum for Canadian,GB and Australia coins.I will put some pictures in there.I never realized there were so many countries. My closets are getting full. My day job stinks now.

I have discovered two 1882 Great Britain one pennies. They are in remarkably good condition... easily VF or EF grading. Per R. S. Yeoman's 2009 edition of World Coins, these are worth $1000 each.

Is this an over-exaggeration? What is your input?

Hi,

I'm not sure what book that is you are reading but my Krause says a GB 1882 penny in VF is $5 and EF is $45. Here in the UK Pennys are very common so the condition really would have to be spectular to get anything near that.

There is a very rare variety with no Heaton mintmark (that's no H below the date) that is worth quite a bit - if that is your find that's great -- perhaps you could post a picture?

However, these really are very, very rare and it is not unknown for some people to try and remove it the H ......
