Just getting started on assessing value, will be taking some time taking good-quality pics and posting interesting ones individually.

My question is on cleaning... is a sonic cleaner taboo? Should these coins be cleaned before photographing, maybe just an alcohol wipe?

I have "bulk" photos of each category if that's of any interest/value.

Have a few England coins that seem to be interesting but will post those elsewhere.

Thanks for your patience with a noob.

Don't clean them with anything that you are wiping the coins surfaces. At the very most a soak in 100% acetone then a rinse with water (distilled). Are you going to keep them or are you photographing because you are going to sell them?

I'll be selling them.

Kids have no interest in them and I'm in the throes of "Swedish Death Cleaning" and taking care of things before my kids have to. :)

Acetone--of the 100% variety--is a good way to go, yes I suggest holding off on the acetone soak until you get some feedback from some of the members around here. Eager to see full, sharp pics.

Do not clean them! While there are ways to properly conserve a coin, cleaning is taboo. Until you learn the difference, please leave them as they are! We can assess them in your photographs as-is.

They have not been properly handled, I'll admit to that. My dad collected coins but not in a "serious collector" way... just tossed in a bin.

There is no need to rinse with distilled water after an acetone soak! Always rinse with fresh acetone. Distilled water is wet and the temptation to pat or rub dry should be avoided! A fresh, flowing rinse will air dry faster than you realize.

A good reason for us to see them before offering solid advice on how to conserve them, if it is even necessary or possible.

Because you are selling I wouldn't even worry about any kind of cleaning.

I believe this is good advice. Leaving it up to the next person is a solid idea.

Thanks all, this is really a great start for this endeavor. I ordered a ring light for my phone, obviously don't want to be posting junk zoomed/cropped pics like this one.

To CCF! Never clean a coin ever. Leave them as is, and sell them the way they are.

@zan, first welcome to CCF. Second, that "junk" photo is actually not too bad for the purposes of posting here. The focus is a little soft, but otherwise the light is adequate, the cropping is well-done, and most importantly it isn't sideways. Perhaps someone who has an online store might weigh in as to its adequacy for selling.
