I have the following Wheat penny that appears to either have been struck through a lot of grease, or it could be weakly struck. I thought it was weakly struck because of the rim not having a high profile, but the "IN GOD WE" and the date seem to be in good shape. I also thought it could have been sanded down due to the lines on the coin, but the aforementioned parts being in good shape makes that seem unlikely. I'm leaning towards it being a grease strike but I'd be interested in any other opinions. Thanks! Edited by w1ll 08/09/2024 9:19 pm

3.06g. The thickness is also quite close to standard at 1.43mm, though that goes down to 1.37mm depending on orientation.

I'll guess acid damage, due to the lower weight. PMD. Not an error coin.

Yes heavy wear, corrosion, or both (but it didn't leave the mint looking like this).
Added: @w1, that was me that added the date and mintmark to your thread title. Including that info helps with the CCF search functionality. I'm guessing a bit on the mintmark though, so if you think that it isn't an S, then let me know and I'll fix it no prob.

to CCF. Yes I noticed the chips on the date too. lots of wear on this one, which can account for the weight loss on it.

All the chips and Struck Through Grease aside, most interesting thing about this one IMO is that it was struck in San Francisco 2 years after the Old Mint closed.

What about the diameter? If it's a little too big it might have been pounded with leather. But then again if it spread out a little it could have been filed to make it the right diameter again, and that would reduce its weight a bit as well.

Could it be some type of Dryer Coin? Some times the rims don't round over into the fields...........

I've put it back in a 2x2 now, but the diameter appears to be standard, and I believe it was right about 19 when I had measured it before.
