There are many ways to achieve this effect artificially, unfortunately.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Someone could easily have dropped a bit of acid onto it.

We get that question a bunch of times each year. Some say it is a plating issue, I think I read that NGC slabbed one that way. Others say it is caused by a cigarette lighter.

I'm thinking that heat caused the copper plating to come off.

@rba, looking at the coin a little more broadly that just that big ol' grey spot on Abe, you can see that there were plating issues when this coin was struck. Specifically, there is split plate doubling on the date, parts of the bust, and TRUST.

Yes there is definitely a lot of Splitting. On the reverse as well. That's why I wasn't sure.
