Hello everyone, Finally got my password sorted to logback in to the forum... Wanted to hear your thoughts on this 1834 small 8 large cent I recently picked up. What grade do you think it will make by a reputed TPG and I am hoping for a minimum of AU55. Pls share your thoughts. Much apprecate your inputs!

Tough call. I'm closer to AU-50 tops.

I'd say AU-50 at best. The color doesn't look original to me, but that might be due to your camera's white balance playing tricks with that green background.

I do see tiny flat spots on the high points, both sides, but my opinion is to grade a little higher with this one. AU-55
Much better than any example of a large Cent in my collection.!

first, never use green as a backdrop it can reflect green tones onto the coin. black is good.
photos can alter what we are seeing here vs what the coin looks like in hand. if the surfaces are flat and dull like we are seeing here I'm leaning old cleaning. when I see faded staining on the surfaces and blotchy toning its something I typically consider. look at the bottom 1/4 of the obv vs the top 3/4. there is a definite delineation in the look of the fields
without better photos I'm thinking AU50 (details). if you want to send new photos with little light it may tell me what the coin looks like in hand and i'll be happy to reassess
if it was mine, i'd acetone soak it so see if could lift some of those stains on the profile

AU details, environmental damage. I'm pretty sure the green spots have eaten into the surface.

I think it's more of a strike issue rather than wear in areas. I can see AU53 details.

Quote: I think it's more of a strike issue rather than wear in areas. I can see AU53 details. Ya never know. I've never been able to distinguish between weak strike and wear - except for the case of no luster such as this coin doesn't have.

MS 62 shot 63 BN . Might straight grade if you can safely remove the light reverse Verdigris . If not , sadly Unc Details . Still a very decent example!

Thank you so much for all your inputs. Got the coin in hand and it does have some luster but have some verdigris damage to it and also a minor rub that is only visible at an angle so decided to send it back... does not worth the gamble. old Copper coins are always tricky. Thank you so much again!
