Wondering how to list this cull coin. As an under priced 1822 listed as 1832 or over priced 1832 listed as a 1822. Don't want to over price it but don't want to under price it either. I know its not for everone but does that look like a 22 or 32?

Right - list it as a historical button coin - that's really your only selling point on this coin.

I totally understand the main theme, its just a melt value junk Cull. However a small niche of buyers still collect these ugly coins. I also agree with the one answer I received, its likely a 1832. Shame because that small niche would pay a nice premium for the rare 1822. Thank you for your replies, I'll likely take it to a few local coin shops for some additional advice on date prior to listing.

Oh and sorry about the header, I sometimes make that century error.

It's not "likely" to be an 1832, it *is* an 1832. There is only one pair of dies used for 1822, and the date looks absolutely nothing like it does on your coin (in particular, the final 2 in the date of a genuine 1822 is completely left of Liberty's lower curl).

This is a double-holed cull of a very common date; I would place its value at about $5. It pretty much holds value only for people who specifically collect holed coins.

Reivers_Jewels: thanks for the poignant information. I examined a few pics of slabbed 1822 and learned a little something today! No need to take it to local coin shop It *is* an 1832 and will be listed as such, "a button holed 1832".

In case you're interested, there is a fascinating history of the dies produced in the 1820s. There were actually four obverse 10C dies created for use in 1822, but only one of them was actually used to produce dimes in 1822. Two of the other obverse dies were overdated for use in 1823, and the fourth die was overdated for use in 1824.

And, as with all coins of this era, the year depicted on the coin is not necessarily the year in which the coin was made. I think this issue mostly disappeared by the coinage of the 1830s.
