So I have a large cent like this the li with the space before B. mine is much worse condition only letter on edge seen is the A from dollar. Anyways before looking at book I tried to see what I could and make notes of what I thought I saw (never had this coin before or know much about it. I thought the final digit in the date was a 4 and on the reverse I thought the back showed some tint stars near the rim.. so with thos enotes looked in the book and of course see the 1794 rev stars and their values even as a 1.. so now immediately doubting what I thought I saw and was wondering what other indicators I should look at that havent been said in this thread yet and if any tips for recovering details on the coin (observation more so then recovery I know with some ancient coins they have used special scans to pull or emulate the eroded information and I wasnt sure if there was anything like that I might be able to try since in this thread it appears the leaf pointing up can be a good indicator and mine is too eroded to see or a way to determine if the things I thought were stars actually are stars siince that on its own is a major indicator)

First step - figure out if it's a Liberty Cap type (1794-1796) or a Draped Bust type (1796-1807.)

Once you know that, your best bet will be to search Google for low grade examples of each date from 1794-1807 and see if you can find a match.

Sometimes even dateless examples can be attributed based on the position of the top hair curl relative to the word LIBERTY, e.g., by the alignment of any visible numerals of the date relative to the bust, or by looking at the spacing of the letters and leaves on the reverse.
