I received a ton of coins from my grandfather after his death and noticed all the coins are in this protective cardboard sleeve.
I don't understand why, when they strike me as a face value coin.

After searching rigorously on the internet I came across "toning".
Is that what I have here on these dimes and again I would say they are still worth face value cause they ain't pretty.

Bottomline, just wondering why would someone cardboard every coin in their inventory when I believe they are worth only face value, and are the looks of this "tone" valuable to some collectors, cause I have a lot? . Thank you my friends for the insight of coin collecting.

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Given the single photo posted, I think were looking at a thin film of crud--perhaps dried glue or soda. That, in my opinion, is not toning. 100% acetone would likely eliminate or reduce that stuff.

Why do collectors place coins in 2x2 flips? I never question what people want to collect and what they choose to place a piece into. Coin collecting is a highly personal pursuit.

@BicolExpress It is what it is. People collect and protect coins for numerous reasons. An acetone bath would help clean up the pictured dime.

As to why someone keeps what they do with no notes left behind. I can only speak for myself. It interest me at the time. Did he 2x2 it because of the toning/stain? Or did something else catch his eye on the obverse? Maybe something else on the reverse or edge that were not seeing? Thanks, Doug.
