Hello everyone!

I joined this forum because I have a dilemma.

My grandparents had a hobby, pulling silver coins out of their change. Hazards of living through a depression and WWII I suppose. They taught me what to look for when I was a kid back in the 70's and I found a few 1968-ish ones myself over the years.

So while it is a coin "collection" it is not a coin collection of the normal type where someone has curated by year/type/rarity/etc. There are literally hundreds of them and frankly I don't know what to do with it all. I have 2 tins full and they are very heavy. Mainly quarters and dimes.

To give an example, I sorted them a few years ago and, pulling a bag off the top, there are 51 quarters from 1961 (image below). As they were all in circulation, they are not in the best nick, probably would not be collectible but I really have no idea.

If I knew what I was doing, yes I could probably sell them individually on ebay or whatever, but I'm not sure that 1. that's the right course of action and 2. it would probably take longer and be more of a hassle than I would like. There's a few Kennedy silver half dollars which I could probably sell on ebay fairly easily in comparison.

So I was wondering if any of you lovely people had a recommendation for a reputable dealer within the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario? I have tried to Google this, but I have no idea who is truly worth dealing with.

Thank you very much for reading and whatever assistance you're able to provide.

You'd probably be better off selling most it as scrap silver. There are a few dealers no too far away that does that regularly. It might be a good idea if you joined the Hamilton Coin Society, the coin club for your area. It has members from Burlington, through Hamilton and down past Grimsby, Alan Roy is the contact. alroy477 at gmail dot com . Every meeting, there is an auction for members to offer for sale. You can also set up at one of their tables and sell items to other members before the meeting. Lots of buying for items of interest.

Everyone and their dog did the same thing back in
the late 60s and early 70s .
So as you state not a collection rather a silver hoard .
All you need to do is this in order .
1 Gate West coins Winnipeg website
2 See their daily buy price for 66 , 67 , 68
Silver coin prices .
3 Find a dealer in your local area ,ask how close they pay
4 Go sell the entire lot
5 Bank , spend or invest the money

Make an appointment at Express gold refining on Victoria St in Toronto. You probably get 90% of bullion value. No muss no fuss.

I agree with Pacificoin on Gatewest. Check out their site for current rates they are buying at. http://markets3.gatewestcoin.com/bullionBuy.html
I know a guy in Toronto who buys at whatever they do, but he doesn't have a store. You can call a couple places and check how close they are.

Another option is going to a coin show. There is one next week in Mississauga. There are some dealers that would probably be willing to buy. https://canadiancoinnews.com/events/

The silver value of pre 1966 coins is 0.6 oz per dollar. The silver price is around $39.50 so bullion value is just under C$24 per dollar. So expect something like $21 - 22 per dollar.

Some dealers (J&M) are selling at less than $21 today.
Others like Gatewest are paying more than $21 currently.
