I have had for many years what appears to be a $1.00 scrip coin or token stamped with "N.Y.S. Co." It was in a collection of random coins that I was told belonged to my grandfather, who died in 1937. Many years ago, an experienced coin collector told me that he thought it might have been issued by The New Yorker Shore Company, but I have been unable to find any information on it anywhere. It's about 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Here's what I could find. Radiant Eagle Saloon chip or Gaming token. The N.Y.S CO. is a counter stamp most likely for advertising purposes.

Thanks for that information, papadoc! I was afraid I would come up empty-handed, and I never expected to get an answer so quickly. Gaming token makes sense. It seemed too heavy and too ornately designed to be company scrip, but I was just guessing, really. It even seems a bit ornate and expensively produced for a gaming token, which makes me wonder what kind of establishment would use it. More mysteries.....

NP Greg. Glad to help. I don't pipe in very often but I'm on the site quite a bit. I have also seen the tokens in <10> and <2.50> denominations. Only a guess but possibly an early Casino token.

A follow-up for anyone who is interested: I was able to find more information about it online. One sale listing described it as being from the 1850s, and I've seen them offered in $1 and $20 denominations for $35-$140. Some seem to have a finish of nickel, aluminum or some other gray- or silver-toned metal. I'm not a metal expert, but this one appears to be brass or some bronze alloy. I suppose they were cast out of metal instead of some cheaper material so they would be difficult to counterfeit.
