I decided to give coin roll hunting a go the other day, first time btw, my initial goal was to find key dates and at least one 2024 and 2009 nickel. Unfortunately, no dice on key dates, but I did find a few that stood out, I have no idea if they hold any value. I think some of the nickels were improperly annealed, found some older ones, and this copper-colored one caught my eye.

The nickel could well be gold plated and then lightly circulated.

BTW: I only posted the copper-colored nickel and not the other ones I mentioned, the other coins in the photos above are just to help compare.

Did they plate the circulated nickels? I've seen the proof nickels that were gold-plated. It is a the same weight as a regular nickel as well.

Nice toning. Could have been exposed to heat or smoke. No real premium, but worth keeping as an example. Being 75% copper, nickels can tone yellow/gold, bluish, or just about any other color.

Could be, idk, I am just learning. I hope I can figure this out, cause I think I like coin roll hunting even if my first batch wasn't so good.

Well a nickel is 75% copper, and there have been instances where the copper content can migrate to the surface in certain circumstances.

Thanks for the comments! I did find one nickel that looks a lot like mine on ebay and it is gold-plated, I'd rather it be toned though.

Gold plating on the westward journey series of nickels is not that uncommon. Sets and individual plated nickels were sold.

Cupro-nickel can acquire a nice golden tone, but this one may be plated based on what I see as wear on the rim.
