As I was looking for coins for the denier thread, I found this one which I have never identified.

I can't make out the obverse design... my best guess would be to start with a French reference like Duplessy first, then explore Italy next (CNI or MEC), then move to Iberia (MEC). Overall design appears high middle ages.

Rx cross appears to have a star & pellet in the upper angles, with a cross IM.

Obverse is more difficult -- I'd align the four pellets at the bottom and see if the cross-looking IM is the beginning of the legend.

I don't have the references listed above on hand, but I think others here can perform internet image searches to narrow down the search a bit (though I'm not sure how those algos work).

Thank you for your suggestions.
Here is the alignment of the obverse with the pellets at the bottom.
I've looked through my references on hand but haven't found a match.
I'll buy some more books, since there still seems to be a lot of information in the classic works that is not online.

Phew, this one was a challenge, but here it is:

County of Penthièvre, immobilisation in the name of Stephan, denier, 1093-1138. Duplessy Feodales 364.

The legends are not easy to decipher, but on the side with the cross it reads STEPhAN (OO) [originally COM], on the other side GVINGAMP (for the mint Guingamp).

Numista: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces35921.html
An example on VCoins: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/nu...Default.aspx

And yes, it is a denier, so please post it in the deniers thread!

Re-orientation of the obverse following the examples in Numista and NumisCorner.

Barbaric head to the right, with a pellet in front of the face.
