Also found this in the batch of cents I picked up today. I'm fairly certain this isn't an RPM, but what exactly caused the mintmark to have that appearance of a shadow? is this a lamination issue?

This is where the sharp edge of the mint mark pierced the copper layer. Zinc rot is starting to set in.

Is it OK to guess here...the outward spread of the planchet upon striking split the copper plating at the junction of the field and MM? Just trying to learn...correct me if I'm off.

It's fine to guess as long as you note that you are guessing - which you did. And your guess was correct. This is a case of split plating, which is common on early zinc cents.
