Hello everyone--here is another coin I can dream about owning one day. I love the Flowing Hair design--not only in how it signifies the birth of a young nation's coinage, but also in how it symbolizes freedom without pretense. The more "socialite" Draped Bust design differs greatly in this respect (although I like both!). How would you grade this one? The seller says a Chinese doctor bought this one raw a long time ago and his family put it up for auction in Shanghai after he passed away. The buyer (who is presumably now the one selling the coin) received it at a coin show, sent in to NGC, and is now selling it on ebay. You can cheat and find it easily. But I'm curious as to how you would actually grade it.

TPGs often ignore luster and solely grade by sharpness of detail. The details look near unc, with a touch of lines and wear. I'll settle on AU-58.

Way over my head. Agree with AU-58, but just a stab. Wonderful coin.

Looks like an AU-58 but chances are NGC put it in an MS holder.

Gorgeous coin  But it begs a serious question lingering, since it was bought by a Chinese doctor, could nefarious folk over in China have taken this real coin, made several casts of this coin, in order to manufacture counterfeit coins in various dates?

I think it is low unc, So I will say 61 maybe 62. These are graded on a sliding scale but the scrapes across the face hold it back.

NGC called is MS(61)!!! I feel privilaged to have a nice EF(40) one--owning an AU(58) - MS(62) feels like a dream!
