Here are examples of both the large and the small date on the 1857 Large Cent for all to see the difference. (I included the reverses because we always want to see both sides!) Enjoy!

nice! thanks for posting that, I didn't know there were two kinds of dates for those.

Then again, I know next to nothing about large cents.

I love the Large Cents! They made a bunch of them and collecting them really isn't that expensive. And they're very cool! The history of American coin minting really is much easier to understand when you examine the large cent. It helps one to understand the manual minting process, the poor grade copper used on the early coins (i.e. porosity), the date overstamps, etc. And there are not that many key coins! I love the Large Cents! (Did I already say that?)

And 1857 is a significant year for coins: the last year of the large cents and Half Cents; and the last year foreign coins were legal tender in the USA.

Only 333,546 large cents were made in 1857, making this one of the lowest mintage years for the series ... and you've got two of them ... doesn't seem right somehow (luckily we seem to share a similar taste in favorite quotes).
