"Bit" was the minor fractional denomination used in the Danish West Indies; ultimately derived from the same origin as the American expression "two bits" to a quarter dollar: larger coins cut into pieces or "bits". The bit seems to have suffered from inflation and devaluation in the Virgin islands: it was only worth 1/5th of a cent, or 2 mils. Thus, this coin is dual-denominated: "5 bits - 1 cent".
