Hi all,
I've acquired a wooden medallion which is identical to the obverse side of the "Battle of Vimiera" (I've seen it spelled Vimeiro), Lisbon, bronze commemorative medallion produced in 1820, engraved by George Mills and commissioned by James Mudie as part of a set. The battle was 1808. The medallion is detailed and has clearly been pressed from the same die, but has a blank reverse. It is made from a pale hardwood, maybe box or apple.
I've not found anything like this online and wondering what it is / why it was made- anyone have any ideas?

@cor, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you post a pic of the other side of this interesting piece? Thx.

Ok thx for posting that. I was hoping for some additional information on the reverse, but other than a couple test drill holes, I'm not seeing too much. I know that the preparatory work for some coins and medals is in plaster, I wonder if this could be a somewhat similar item. Regardless of what it is, I'd put it into a 2x2 for safekeeping and try to limit the exposure to humid air. Hopefully, we will get someone who can weigh in with a little more information, so please keep checking back to this thread periodically.

It is a curious piece. Perhaps from a die test?

The dies for these medals were used for restrikes. I think twice after the originals.

Vimeiro was and is the correct spelling. The medal is nicely engraved but I passed on a bronze one because the mistake in the spelling puts me off.
