Thanks EV, oddguy, coinfrog, Marve and Dearborn. When Marve posted about broken post I suddenly saw what that meant in my mind's eye. The insides of letters show up as little posts on the striking die, which makes them more vulnerable to breakage.

Oddguy, I think I have already found my second broken post in the 9 of the date here.
