I thought I saw a brownish/yellowish color in the broken metal area. The weight might be the issue? Metal composition? It is magnetic.

Probably replated and the plating has chipped or worn off on that spot.

Agreed. Almost certainly coin has been re-plated. Very common with the '43 One Cent.

Is it a keeper or does it have any value?

Agree with comments above. Reprocessed Steelie. I hate when people mess with coins. The replating has chipped away in the questioned area. Rust results.

Even though it's reprocessed, if I were you, I'd keep it. '43 was the only year a steel cent was produced & there is a slight possibility your coin could be a DDO or have an RPM. At the very least, keep it as a novelty or use it as an educational piece when comparing to other '43 Lincoln cents you may come into in the future.

Agree, plated. Perhaps on 'older' plating with some exfoliation.
