Hey all,

I'm trying to teach myself how to become better at grading and recognizing common issues with coins. This would be considered environmental damage, correct? I know the pictures are only ok, but I figured for this example it wouldn't matter too much. Plus I didn't want to break it out of the 2x2

Yes, this appears to be environmental damage, unfortunately.

Thanks guys, after a lot of reading articles, viewing examples and reading the forums I seem to be losing the respect I had for PCGS and NGC. More and more I'm reading it's pivotal to be able to grade for yourself. This is a skill I've been avoiding. As much as I love collecting learning new things can always be challenging.

Can you elaborate on this?

I could go into to detail but let me just link you to another conversation so I don't just rewrite what's already out there, it starts getting into it about halfway through the thread:

This is just a glimpse into what I've been reading but as the others say: buy the coin not the case.
