Yeah so as you'll see the coloring isn't quite right... what causes this? I think it's pretty cool.

Looks like it had tape on it at some point. Folks used to tape change of all sorts in children's birthday and holiday cards back in the day.

To me, looks more consistent with tape toning for one of the reasons above, where the tape originally protected a tad more of the coins red copper color while the rest of the coin toned to a nice, appealing brown color.  So XF-45 (but not enough to call this details) on grading

Tape or some sort of rubberband as it sat in grandma's junk tray for some years

I'm on team tape, but would add that sometimes folks taped the coins in their blue Whitman folders because otherwise the coins would fall out.

I agree with the tape theory as well. Should of thought about it.

sure looks like tape was on it for a while protecting the surface. the sharp right angles is a bit of a give-a-way there.
