Is the 2 in the date doubled or was the 2 struck over a different number?

Pictures are quite small but appears the "2" took a circulation hit there. PMD.

I found a jar full of 1982's at a yard sale. Here is another 1982-d coin which the date looks much thinner than first images posted.

that the first coin's 2 has taken a hit. Also keep in mind that there are two different styles of 2 for this year. This is the Large Date variety which appears thicker overall than the Small Date.

Rather than me just telling you, learn how to do research on coins. Example; There is a very rare 1982 cent, it would sell for about 10,000.00 and a quick sell at that. Since you said you have a jar of that year, it could be in there? Have fun.

Thank you Mr. Oddguy. I found this penny with a different 2 so now it looks like my coin may have been struck twice. 2 over a different 2. Also, Mr. Oddguy I was told this was the best website to learn about coins.

Yes this in my opinion the best web site. A lot of people here are very experienced collectors and volunteer helping because they enjoy it. Your other 1982 cent looks like it has Mechanical Doubling, which has no value. Picture is not the best but you are doing pretty good so far. Do you see the different types of date your two coins have? Small and large.

yes thank you for that info but now I am more confused with this next photo. I would think they would look exactly the same. clearly not just by the rim.

They are the same variety (Large Date), but die wear has caused the difference in appearance. Dies wear progressively, so coins struck with more "fresh" dies will appear more crisp. Over time, the dies wear down and lines become softer. That makes details appear "fatter" and less clear overall. The first coin struck by a die pair will not be exactly the same as the last coin struck by that same pair. It's a spectrum.
I understand your curiosity and the only way to satisfy it is to learn more about the minting process. Once you learn exactly how coins are made, you will understand why those two coins look different.

I agree, with the better picture not at an angle the date is clearly the same size. You did well by the research to question that.

Imo MINT quick rehubbing of small date over large date but failed impress sm 2 deep enough. tilted rehubbing of die
impresssing sm date 198 with lg 2 with elements small 2 appearing just under beside it you can see small 2 and its curve under just failed push through leaving lg 2 unscathed . The 9 is small date because how 9's beginning angles above mm , 9's in lg date aims at mm.
I think it was on the fly to keep producing .thats my theory small date over large .

It's not a "re-hubbing" of SD over a LD.

The large date has many elements of the design that are different than the Small date.
One of those differences is the distance the 2 is from the rim. So if it was Re-hubbed like suggested, the 2's (and the rest of the date) wouldn't line up and be on top of each other.

The 2 has most likely taken a hit.
