This one has a strong case of Machine Doubling. The die scratches match in the area of the date, but the marker at the edge of the memorial building is not there.
Thanks for looking.

Mike

It makes it hard when the devices are pushed around to determine mint mark location?
It could be several different numbers.

The correct location would be the difference. I'm not sure if you measure from the area that is part of the Machine Doubling or where the metal is moved? Not often we see this dilemma.

Good point Coop. There are so many 1960D rpm's that I usually keep them in my (To look at later) box. I am pretty sure on this one because the scratches in your marker photos, above the date, for the 045 are a spot on match.
I would imagine the MD would negate any value on a coin like this, but I've always wondered how it is looked at on high end varieties?
Thanks again.

Mike

The mintmark location is easy. It's at the upper edge of the partially flattened mintmark. Nothing to it. What you are seeing is the coin as it would be struck normally, only partially flattened from a die bounce. So take the whole shape of the details as the 'normal' position of everything.

I agree that this is an RPM - don't know which one. My own perspective - and this is mine alone...if I found that coin in a roll, back in the roll it would go. Damaged mintmarks and Machine Doubling that flattens mintmarks render RPMs worthless as such in my opinion.

Oh high end varieties - it just breaks my heart to see them. I see Machine Doubling as the same thing as coin damage under a scope. I would offer machine damaged coins at a far lower price than normally struck coins, but anyone would be a fool to toss out 1969S doubled dies because they had Machine Doubling. They just simply wouldn't be worth near the 'normal' doubled die value to me.
