I think it is a coin that somehow was manipulated into that concave form. I don't think it is or ever was part of a button. I don't think it is a capped die. It think somebody was tinkering with it, and they were a good tinker-er. Maybe it was to become a ring?

I agree, it wasn't minted like that. Does look like it might have been an attempt to make a bottom.

Can be a mistake with die for farthing? Internal size is exactly the diameter of farting...
