I agree with the above--seems to be a very pretty coin. I'm interested to hear the price if you pick it up.

The asking price is high. I haven't made an offer because I think the coin slabbed at AU would sell for about the same... So a better question to the forum might be ... What's a fair price for this coin? I can look up comps on ha and ebay but forum member thoughts are probably more insightful... I recognize the price is what a buyer is willing to pay ...but more subjectively I'm curious to hear what others think is fair.

I've never bought French gold, but I think spence and erafjel have.

Hmm I have, but not sure that this makes me a good guide for pricing. I see two similar pieces up for sale on ma-shops.com right now from a shop in Belgium. One seems to be in better condition and is priced at 1500 Euros while the other is a bit rougher and priced at 1300 Euros. Both have had their asking prices dropped recently, perhaps due to the recent cratering in gold spot values. In that case, I'd say go for it if it is in this price range, you like it, *and* can afford the cash outlay.

@spence. Thanks. I will poke around MA shops; I do feel the market for this type is more robust in Europe than likely anywhere else.
I'd make a bid on the coin and maybe try to bundle it with the 1875 Chile 2 pesos I've posted elsewhere.
Thanks for responding. I appreciate it.

That is a very nice Francis I ecu. The mint is Paris (dot below 18th letter, it is a common mint for this type) and the time span can be narrowed down to 1520-1540. It looks like AU/SUP condition, and a reasonable price for this type and mint would be 1000-1100 €. Good luck!

I passed on this coin which is priced at €900 meaning the shop would likely accept €800-850. In researching examples, it seems far more common in AU than I expected. Just looking at 6-10 examples on ebay I received heavily discounted offers well below €900 from sellers with the coin already slabbed. I'm new to these type coins so thank you again for the responses.

Hammered gold of this century from important mints in western europe is not uncommon. But this one looks very nice. The shop was asking a good price.

@jecz I agree, but a certified example in comparable condition, with a similar or slightly better strike, can be purchased for approximately $150 less.
