From the pictures, can you tell if this coin has wood grain toning, or if it's just harshly scrubbed. I apologize for the size and quality of the photos. They may, in fact, be scans. They are not mine, but are provided by the seller. How would you grade this one? Thanks. Image: svdb1.jpg26.53 KB Image: svdb2.jpg23.61 KB

My first impression is NOT genuine. The pitting in the left obverse field makes me think cast counterfeit.
Also - the rim looks "wrong" next to LIBERTY at 9:00 on the obverse and "IN GOD WE TRUST" looks like it's too far from the rim.
Then again it could just be my tired eyes but it doesn't seen right. Strictly on wear the coin looks AU. It should be examined in hand by an expert because this coin is widely counterfeited and quite pricey in higher grades.

I have my doubts about this coin also and would not buy it based on what I see from the scan.

The 1909 (especially the 0) looks very very low relief... as well as the rest of the coin. But, the details are there, yet still low relief... as in the coin looks to have not that much wear but very very flat. **From ebay, too? Mind if you give us the link?

My general take-- with the others. If a key coin is bought raw, the seller should furnish proof and here the pics fail to provide assurance. Good to err on the side of caution here--this cannot be left to opinion, imo. Not only were the pics small, but they were angled (making it hard to judge mm position and shape (critical). I've straightened/enlarged the pic. As a reference, this pic shows the mintmark position of the 4 known obverse dies for the 09-S VDB:

DV, Thanks for that picture of the mintmarks! I've not seen that before... and now I have it saved for future reference. This forum rocks!

Yes, thanks, DVCollector, for the mintmark information, and for taking the time re-size and re-angle the poor photos or scans or whatever they are. And thanks, all, for the consensus. wd1040, I don't mind providing the link, if I am permitted: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...260405719023***Edited by Staff to fix link ***

Thanks! Just goes to prove that I'm not too proud to show off my near-limitless technological deficiencies. I am attempting to have staff remove that link, and am searching for the correct one. Be back as soon as I am able to find it.

First off: I am not an expert on Lincoln's. But if I was spending that much money on a coin that is counterfeited so often, I would only check out slabbed(PCGS or ANACS) only. Just a skeptic. Price is about right - not much of a deal.

I agree...I did not post because of any serious consideration of buying this particular coin. As I posted this in the grading section, I was hoping to get feedback on the photos that I thought to be odd. This process goes a long way in steepening my learning curve, so any and all opinions are most welcomed.

If you are making a purchase of this magnitude, especially buying from unknown sellers on ebay, make sure your key-date coins are TPG'd by PCGS,NGC,ANACS only. Do not buy raw!
