Hi:

I am pretty new to coin grading and I was hoping I could get some opinions on these two. Thanks!

Both coins look to be around VF30 and both look improperly cleaned unless the lighting is really playing tricks on them!

, to the community. The sheild nickel looks to be VF-25 and the Morgan dollars looks to be F-15.

Thanks! What characteristics do you look for when trying to determine if a coin has been cleaned?

Look at the protected areas on the Shield nickel. The high points of the devices and the open areas of the fields look "clean" while the low lying areas and areas near the rim (protected) show expected contamination for a circulated coin that's nearly 140 years old.

To me that says "cleaned" but there are others here who can chime in also....
