I found this one last night too. I did not make it through my 1980s pile yet, but this one obviously stuck out like a sore thumb.

I did attempt to research and found that people seem to try and fake a missing plating error? I inspected the coin and did not find any trace of copper. On the obverse there's a ding near the "D" mint mark and the insides there show no trace of any copper.

I did weigh the coin and it's hovering between 2.4 - 2.5 grams (for reference, typical copper plated zinc Pennies are weighing in at 2.5 - 2.6 grams on my scale).

Is this an actual error/missing plating?
Environmental/PMD?
Altered coin?

Thanks for looking!

Looks like the plating was removed by heat.

Hello. I also have one of these with the same date. Others I have seen on the internet are also 1986 D. The one I have is also about .030 inches larger in diameter then other Lincoln Penny's my question is why are they all 1986 D.

Mikec1, you might have what we call a Texas Cent, since it's larger in diameter.

There are plenty of accidental or on-purpose Zincoln science experiments out there, with dates all across the board, 1982 to present.

The measurements on my Texas Cent is .060 the same as a lot of other Penny's I checked. I think it should be a little thinner. Just curious that's all.
