I am getting a better handle on distended and distorted doubling. On nickels, those doubled die types tend to produce splits in a radial direction (all outwards, all inwards, or both), including the blocky Frankenstein feet on Unum.

What sort of doubled die produces these split serifs and lines in the devices? Is this pivoted hub doubling? Tilted hub doubling? When viewed at 90 degrees, the full extent of the doubling is harder to see. At an angle, the multiple hubbings become evident.

I perused the listed DDR's for this year and found one that could be or is very similar to the doubling your example is showing. The PR-36-R-V-CW from K-2 is a class V (Pivoted) doubled die. So, you should have an area on the perimeter of the coin (the pivot point) that shows less doubling and more that opposes the pivot point. On the listing I provided, the pivot point is at 2 o'clock, around the M of UNUM.

Thanks John, I have read that article as well as the ones on Wexler and CONECA. Am I correct in my belief that pivoted hub doubling (Class V) is responsible for this kind of DDR?

-makecents-, I think that is an excellent diagnosis. I had narrowed it down to WDDR-034 on Brian's Variety Coins. That Wexler entry appears to have the same window die gouge marker as your DDR-036 on Variety Vista.

I also see that VV/CONECA lists it as a Pivoted Hub (Class V) doubled die, so I guess that confirms my thinking above. The Wexler entry just said clockwise, although I suppose that directly implies a pivot double.

The K2 pivot point makes sense (har!) because there is barely any doubling on E Pluribus Unum. The strongest separation is on United and the M, decreasing slightly as you move around the coin perimeter towards America.

I have always wondered a bit why pivoted hub doubles do not produce visible doubling on the steps. One might assume that those long, straight, parallel lines would immediately show any misalignment in the hubbings.

Good reading/studying on this subject!
It is very involved indeed.
