Per another thread on here recently talking about some older proof nickels, I figured I would ask about them.
I have a few pre-1971 proof nickels. 64, 68, 69 and 70.
I was considering adding some to my collection, since some are pretty reasonably priced, particularly from 1955 and up. You can actually buy them in sets on
ebay. One seller that I normally use, Dave's coins, has a proof set from 1956-1964 for a little over 20 dollars.
Before 1955, they can be pretty expensive.
Also, it seems to be honestly that the pre-1971 proofs look better IMO than the 1971 and newer ones. Any cause for this? I know before 68, they were struck in Philadelphia. I believe the 68, 69 and 70 proofs were the only Jefferson S proof nickels that were struck and also had S business strike coins available at the same time. After 1971 and onward, S coins were proof only.
I may possibly fill up some of my spots in my Dansco album that are Philly dates with P proofs, because they kind of look better IMO.
Any thoughts? What is the oldest proof nickel you guys have attained?
