Hey all! Found this 1983 penny which I strongly suspect is a DDO but being new and never seeing one in person I was wondering if someone would confirm/ deny this suspicion for me. There is also quite a bit of gunk on the coin and I know the number one rule is to not clean any coin but is there a non destructive way to remove some of it? Lastly is this something that would be worth getting graded if it is a true DDO? Thanks for taking a look

Definitely a DDO, great find! You could use 100 percent acetone and Verdi-Care to get rid of that gunk.
Errers and Varietys.

Nice DDO there. E&V's cleaning/preservation suggestions would work fine. Be careful.

to the CCF Being a zincoln, I don't think acetone or Vedi care is going to help.

Weigh it. If it's around 3.1g it's a copper. In that case, you can send it to ANACS for grading and restoration. Otherwise, pour some coke on it and immediately rinse with purified water, then gently pat it dry with tissue.

Nice find!!! Quote: Otherwise, pour some coke on it and immediately rinse with purified water, then gently pat it dry with tissue. To each their own - I would never consider using an acid on copper or silver coins. Coke is acidic at a 2.6 pH. Acetone and VC as mentioned.

Yeah, don't try to clean it yourself if it's copper. That's what I meant. It's probably not a copper planchet, but making sure is always best.
